<I think the Chechens are fighting for their independence and self-rule, and we know how these fights tended to go, with nothing but history as a guide.>
Jay, I think "the Chechens" is not a single entity. Just as "The Northern Irish" is not a single entity. The Northern Irish do not want independence from Great Britain, Britain or The United Kingdom and probably not even from England and they don't want self-rule other than in the normal local functions.
Similarly, I suspect The Chechens don't want independence from Russia.
This is just part of the Moslem Head-Hacking revolution. They need to be stopped because, like Hitler, they will not stop until somebody stops them. They are on a superstitious ideological medievil empire building process with death and mayhem as their bywords. I don't want to be ruled by somebody who is as delighted by death [especially of other people's, but even their own] as I am by life. Do you? They will get you when it is your turn.
The Yanks in the 1990s mistook Chechen Moslem Head-Hackers for freedom fighters, just as they mistook the IRA Omagh bombers as freedom fighters. The stupid, crazed, ignorant and 'excellent values, ready for export' Irish-Americans sent money and arms to sundry 'freedom fighters'.
When it came back and bit them on the bum with the destruction of the Twin Towers, they decided that maybe these Islamic Freedom Fighters and IRA Omagh [rhymes with Omar and Osama - they say history rhymes] bombers weren't such jolly fine fellows after all.
Now they are a little more circumspect about thinking it an excellent idea for Moslem Head Hackers in Western China to create mayhem and conduct murder against Chinese.
They must even be having second thoughts about their military training which is perhaps weak on ethics but strong on dehumanizing and killing the enemy as the optimium solution to problems, which has resulted in the Washington sniper, Tim McVeigh and a lack of gentle harmony. The ideal soldier should have very high ethical standards, not just be a mindless "I was just following orders" Nazi goose-stepper. Then again, Tim McVeigh wasn't following any orders and reckoned he was the captain of his soul.
I'm happy enough with my values and will not be going shopping for the USA exports which are apparently going on sale soon. I wonder how many will buy second class world citizenship.
