Firstly, thanks to all contributors for all the useful info. In the last year, I've networked two old computers, installed Zone Alarm, AVG, Adaware etc. Using advise from this thread as a starting point, then searching further into security issues, I believe I'm running a fairly secure system (top marks from "Shields Up").
Going along with my philosophy that less is better (especially when considering $$$$), I utilize as much free advise and software as possible. I hope that I'll be able to contribute to this thread in the future. I still use Win95 and it seems many of the issues raised here address Win98 and later releases. Some day I'll upgrade my 486.
In the spirit of giving back, I am attempting to locate a specific website that was accepting contributions toward defending a lawsuit. As I recall, a computer geek set up his own PC help/troubleshooting/software reviewing site. He reviewed a certain manufacturer's anti virus (or was it firewall?) software and found it to contain some flaws. The manufacturer is suing the geek from a different state so apparently he has to defend himself in that particular state and the costs are exorbitant.
Does that story ring a bell to anyone? Please point the way.
Thanks in advance, take it easy,
