OT: No, I do not know much about Lake Placid, but I sure can find out....I would be happy to use my Orlando/Lakeland/Tampa resources to help you in any way.
As for land/housing values........in the last four years, they have appreciated tremendously in Central Florida! Real Estate here is a great investment. The weather is so wonderful. Flowers and green all year long.
I bought a house by Bay Hill for $120,000 5.5 years ago and just sold it for $185,000 with no improvements. AND, my husband got to live in it with the tax deduction. Not bad, about a 12% appreciation in price without considering tax deduction benefits.

I live in Orlando by Disney, I can drive east to the Atlantic Ocean (Cocoa Beach) in 45 minutes. I can drive west, to my budds in Tampa and the Gulf, in 75 minutes.
I can take my pick of where I want to go every weekend. I love to fish.
