Gore's statement that procedures required that fighter planes be dispatched as soon as passenger jets deviated from their flight paths was wrong. Gore Vidal is demented so I understand him thinking this. But why would you believe this? Have you ever heard of a plane being shot down in the US because if "deviated from its flight path"?

A plane even crashed on the White House lawn in 1994. It wasn't shot down.
