From what I remember, the fighter jets were next to the plane in just 20 minutes at 30,000+ feet after communication was lost.

If they scrambled so fast, I wonder why they didn't catch up to the plane till it reached Memphis.

I took the ABCNEWS aviation analyst to be a knowledgeable source:
ABCNEWS aviation analyst John Nance told ABCNEWS.com chat participants this afternoon, “There is no set procedure for the Air Force or Navy to scramble an armed fighter for [that purpose] & simply because it’s an unprecedented occurrence.”

I think our military has been oriented to defending against external threats not internal ones. I'm sure changes need to be made (and I hope they have been) in our internal security practices and procedures. We have had planes crash into the WH lawn and into the Pentagon now.

It's a giant mistake to take a surprise attack as evidence of a government conspiracy. Similar charges are made about Pearl Harbor - and they are just as groundless. People subscribe to these theories because they are attracted to the idea of demonizing this or that administration - not for rational reasons.
