Interesting column by Andrew Sullivan in the October 14 Time.

He refers to recent findings that the drive in the schools to increase self-esteem among students may in fact be detrimental to students and lead to increased violence. That people who are encouraged to have high self-esteem, when the world at large doesn't validate their self-esteem (maybe it doesn't give them straight As in calculus just because they feel good about themselves) are more likely to become violent than those whose expectations are more in line with their abilities and who aren't encouraged to think they can be football stars when they don't have the physical abilities to.
