hey now, don't go slamming bureaucrats

Actually I'm a closet bureaucrat. I was recently invited by our government employment agency to review my employment status, my net worth, and cost of living expenses. Just to see if I qualified for any of the many government assistance programs. They were freaking AMAZED I actually had employment insurance. They never met anyone who had before.

I dazzeled them with an up to the day breakdown of every penny I spent over the last 18 months. All my assets world wide, etc. They were impressed. In fact they nearly offered me a job. If the pay wasn't so crap, I would have gone for it. They have been on strike quite a bit recently. Even guys fairly high up in the organization get paid crap.

Most of the fireman (who want a 40% raise) from about £16.5k are on "earnings related family assistance" as they have a wife and a few young kids, and earning below a given national set wage. Giving them a 40% raise would just remove the "earning related assistance" which is paid by the government anyway. It's all a load of B/S from start to finish. The economy here is TOAST.

It would take over £100k to get me to pull people from burning buildings and smashed up cars with gasoline tanks.

Dr Martins shoes are ace. I have a pair. Best shoes out there. Industrial quality Made in England for eons...opps. There goes some more tax revenues...

1,000 jobs go at Dr Martens as plants move to China

ananova.com

Dr Martens is closing its British factories and moving production to China, with the loss of more than 1,000 jobs.

The jobs will go at the footwear firm's factories in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Somerset, the company has confirmed.

Dr Martens has announced a 90-day consultation process with its staff, a legal requirement, before any job losses.

But it has already confirmed that the jobs will go.

David Suddens, managing director of the firm's family-owned parent company, R Griggs Ltd, said he regretted the "proposed closures".

The firm's union, the Knitwear and Foot Apparel Trade Union is opposed to the move.

The Doc Martens footwear brand, with its air-cushion soles, has become a fashion staple since production began in Northampton in 1960.

The boots have been worn by everyone from Madonna to skinheads to Pope John Paul II, who ordered customised white boots.

Production is being moved out of the UK is because the boots are cheaper to make in China. The firm says all its competitors "outsourced" years ago.
