Today it's out that most of the hostages that died, and the body count is climbing, were killed by the gas.

Better to have tried to save them by using the gas, than to have allowed them to be gunned down or blown to atoms by the Chechens. That point will be lost on many, I'm sure. I certainly don't envy Putin's position in having to make a decision like that.
