You're right Maurice.. I shouldn't use the term "liberal" out here so loosely...
I was just flinging out the term for the benenfit of those who post here who claim to be liberals..
I'm just sick of race-baiting.. I'm sick of both the black and white separatists/fanatics who seem to only be able to point out how people are different, and thus somehow inferior or oppressed (depending on their agenda d'jour)...
I was a sophomore in HS when the Aryan Nations tried to organize in our county.. We weren't particularly "diverse" since few blacks lived in our state, but we had a large hispanic community. Yet.. neither were we racist either and everyone was appalled that these hate-mongers would want to defile our community with their hate.. Well, the first time they held a cross-burning on a farm south of town, the Sheriff and others did about everything they could do legally to run 'em out on a rail...
So I kinda take personal when I see ANYONE holding celebrity status using race as a political weapon. I don't even like it when I hear blacks calling each other "nigga", since I find the term offensive, and it suggests that the only reason blacks hate the word is because whites use it. I find it morally self-denigrating and counter-productive to creating self-respect, let alone respect from other ethnicities.
But most of all, I find it extremely offensive when one political faction uses it to destroy the career of another minority (such as Powell) who have earned every bit of their recognition based upon their merit, and not on their race.
Because the only way we're EVER going to get past this issue of race in this, or any other country, is to judge people not on their color, but on their ideals and their ability.
But some people need to perpetuate the race card.. In fact, some political activists use race blatantly in order to accomplish other goals having nothing to do with race. Some, and I opine Belafonte is one of these, use race to demean all blacks that disagree with him political viewpoints. He uses race to prevent someone of a different political view from being able to debate policy on its merits...
It's an incredibly narrow minded, and down-right racist perspective for him to have. And it should be liberals, not conservatives, who should be taking the lead in admonishing him and anyone else who uses such tactics.
Hell... at least Jerry Falwell, moron that he is, had the good sense to apologize for his comments on Muhammed.... Harry Belafonte doesn't even have that much class...
