<<Literary Site Resurrected
A popular highbrow Web site that died early this month sprang back to life Friday after the Chronicle of Higher Education rescued it from bankruptcy.
Arts & Letters Daily, created in 1998 by an Australian professor, had built an audience of 60,000 daily readers for its succinct, wry summary of articles found across the Web. The site linked every day to about 20 new articles it considered intellectually worthy, much as Matt Drudge's Web site points to hot political stories.
The site closed the first week of October after its parent publishing company University Business filed for bankruptcy. The Chronicle of Higher Education, a District-based weekly newspaper, snapped it up at a bankruptcy sale on Thursday.
Scott Jaschik, editor of the Chronicle, said the site shouldn't change under the new ownership; founder Denis Dutton, a professor of philosophy at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, would continue as its editor.>> |
