Launch of (Belgian) 3G likely to be delayed until 2004

28/10/2002

IBPT, the Belgian telecoms regulator has accepted the request made by three mobile operators to delay the launch of 3G services by 15 months, until December 2004, Rik Daems, the telecoms minister, has announced.

"If the current situation in Belgium does not change, I will follow the IPBT's advice" Daems has said.

A ministerial meeting on UMTS is due to be held in early December. In February, a delay of one year was granted to 3G licence holders Proximus, Mobistar and KPN, until December 2003.

The three operators say a further delay is necessary in order to get new equipment to ensure the proper functioning of 3G handsets.
