Just heard Leon Aren of American Enterprise Institute say on Charlie Rose that the theatre attack represented the first Chechen suicide mission. He noted that the farewell videotape included all the Islamist trimming, including females in burkas (in Chechnya! they never wore anything like burkas there). He spoke of the "Palestinianization" and "Islamisation" of the Chechen conflict, and wondered if Al Qaeda was trying to take over the Chechen movement, which has been mostly secular until now. He also noted that Muscharoff was speaking last week about a possible settlement of the conflict, and speculated that AQ elements might be acting in Chechnya as Hamas did in Israeli in 1994, staging big attacks in order to prevent any settlement.
