2.5G, A Chance for Handset Market Reshuffle
Oct 29 2002

CHINA, (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- With the competition
between China Mobile and China Unicom, the two largest
mobile communication operators in China, growing fierce,
another competition also comes on the stage secretly.

Korean and Japanese handsets began to impact the
market share of American and European manufacturers.
2.5G will perhaps change the market position of China
Mobile and China Unicom, and will also be a good
opportunity for Korean and Japanese handset
manufacturers to break through the predomination of
American and European manufacturers in Chinese
market.

Currently, apart from Motorola, Korean handset makers
predominate Chinese market. China Unicom's CDMA1X
network is speeded up by the funds raised from
A-share market. After China Unicom purchased 700000
handsets from Samsung, the company will also
purchase one million camera handsets from SKT.
According to the statistics of In-Stat, the global CDMA
market volume will reach up to 22.5 billion USD in 2002,
Samsung and LG are predicted to occupy 35%-40% of
the total market share. Samsung forecasted that it
would sell 6-7 million CDMA handsets domestically, and
export 13-14 million CDMA handsets in 2002. LG
expected that it would sell 4.3 million CDMA handsets
domestically and export 6.5-7 million handsets. The two
companies both regarded Chinese market as the main
destination to fulfill their sales target.

In addition, Korean and Japanese handset makers also
did well in GSM sector. Working along the two lines of
GSM and CDMA by Korean and Japanese manufacturers
will engender great menace to American and European
handset manufacturers. With the technologies and
standards opening gradually, Korean and Japanese
manufacturers will gain more flexibility and advantages
in the consumable sector.
