I guess it's because his son, married to a Japanese girl, is there and he doesn't want to be there for the time being. Or maybe, because of his age, 60+, they didn't want him. He signed up on the spur of the moment for the first teaching assignment available. Then his employers retained him by making him a manager. Too bad my friend is not a specialist like you are.
