LG Electronics to export CDMA equipment to Nepal

LG Electronics Inc. said yesterday it has won a $53 million order for CDMA devices and handsets from United Telecom Limited (UTL), the No. 1 private telecom operator in Nepal.

Under the contract, LGE will provide base stations for a third-generation CDMA (code division multiple access) network, mobile phones and WLL (wireless local loop) handsets to UTL for the next three years on a turnkey basis.

LG, the world's No. 6 mobile phone maker, plans to complete equipment installation by the first quarter of next year so UTL can start offer the services in the first half of next year.

The company said the contract will help it secure a foothold to expand its presence in the Nepalese market. UTL, more than 80 percent owned by Indian state-run telecom firms, has been pressing ahead with the Nepalese government's plan to reach more people with telecom services after being appointed the country's CDMA operator in June.
