>On a different note, I read an interesting commentary claiming that for all we know, Apple could already be dead. That is, since people cannot switch computer systems overnight Apple is expected to have a "ramp down" sales period, in which users go through some upgrade cycles on their way out. Any arguments for or against the "Apple is already dead" scenario described above?<
From a psychological perspective your post (as well as others) bother me a lot. Try a substitution on the above:
"On a different note, I read an interesting commentary claiming that for all we know, Alomex could already be dead. That is, since people cannot switch computer operators overnight Alomex is expected to have a "ramp down" period on his way out." Any arguments for or against the "Alomex is already dead" scenario described above."
Do I have any basis for such an assertion. No, not the slightest. (I believe I read that same commentary and neither did that columnist.)
But if wanted to get rid of you and others on this thread share my opinion and we keep repeating it over and over ... And if, somehow, your employer and co-workers, friends and loved ones are repeatedly exposed to it, you'll eventually be without a job, family and friends.
To Scott Crumley: The pervasive anti-mac bias in the media invokes the disparaging rhetoric that numerically dominant cultures have used to destroy minorities throughout history. My brother-in-law is a psychiatrist and army colonel who's been assigned to counsel African genocide victims. He's written a paper on the connection between collective ego formation and their reaction the threat posed by minorities to group identity.
I'm glad all we're talking about is a computer operating system and the price of a stock.

PS
1) As I'm posting this, I'm watching speech-enabled Macs on NightLine used to give language training to Eastern European orphans.
2) Most recent numbers I have from November to January have Apple, together with MacOS clones, *taking* corporate market share from Wintel. (If anyone has more recent numbers please post.)
3) Regarding individual users switching over, I just installed OS8 today. It is *very* slick. There is no way I would willingly switch to anything Microsoft is currently or contemplating shipping. How many people *willingly* switch from a BMW to a Yugo? |
