I think the market is getting hit more by "too far too fast" concerns of overvaluation on a ST trading basis then by the somewhat suspect negative consumer confidence report. Look at ASML, CREE, and LU with gains of 80%, 100%, and 100% respectively in less than a month before the latest round of profit taking. A little profit taking at this point would not be unusual or unhealthy.
