Telephone service started in 1877. By the end of that year, there were 3,000 telephones in service. Twenty five years later, Bell had 800,000 telephones and independent companies had 600,000. Still quite limited service for the entire country. The first coast-to-coast telephone line was not completed until 1915. Compare that with the growth in the internet. No comparison in the ability of society to have time to adapt and adjust to new technology.
