Carl,

Yeah, there were too many splits going on in the mid and late 90's to keep prices in a "buyable" range. HP did a number of them as well, and is now well below the range in which they tried to keep the price (buying CPQ didn't help, either, but the price was well down even before then).

Reverse splits have had a taint that I expect will be temporarily set aside as a number of companies "correct" some of those splits.
