One thing that seems clear to me concerning the recent snipers case is that all kinds of information is not being handled in any way where dots can be connected. This is at the heart of Homeland Security. This is an application where the centralized analysis of exabytes of data is required.

FBI Called Three Times on Accused Snipers

Apparently, the police stopped the vehicle of the accused
snipers Muhammad and Malvo many times, yet database
searches came up empty, and there was no information
available on the two.

But there should have been.

In another blow to the FBI, who seem to have their heads in
the sand regarding threats to America and her citizens, a
reporter for the New York Times told Connie Chung last
night that in fact the FBI had been notified of suspicions
about the former John Williams and his "son" three separate
times, not just two, as has been reported.

Dean Murphy told Mrs. Chung on her "Connie Chung Tonight"
show about a woman who was friends with Muhammad, but
called the FBI after their friendship ended about a year
ago: "She was one of three, that we know of, at least," he
said.

"She was a friend of Mr. Muhammad's and Mr. Malvo's. And
she says that she actually helped them find a gunsmith to
look at a weapon that Mr. Muhammad was interested in having
altered. And that was last fall. So, she would have been
the second person to have had some contact with federal
authorities about something very suspicious."

Mrs. Chung asked: "Why did she call the FBI? Was it simply
the gun or was there more to it?"

Mr. Murphy replied: "Well, the gun was the main thing.
She's pretty up front about the fact that she called the
FBI after her friendship ended. She said she was suspicious
all along.

"When he asked her to drive him to this backyard gunsmith
out of town, he made it clear to her that he didn't want to
do it in town because he didn't want to get detected and he
wanted assistance in finding somebody who might be discrete
about it.

"So there were a lot of red flags, in her mind, at that
time. And once her friendship ended, I think she got some
conscience and decided that she needed to report it."
