Our own government is a revolutionary movement --have you forgotten? We have clearly been out to export democracy all over the world, sometimes with force of arms -- have you neglected to notice that?

You say not many people cowered in fear during the sniper episode. I don't live there, so maybe that's true. But did the media, then, make it up about schools being locked down and children not allowed to go outdoors at recess to play? Did the media make it up about the Guardian Angels pumping gas and interviews with people who admitted that they were terrified to stop for gas? Did the media make it up about police escorting children to school? Did Karen make it up when she said the best time to buy gas was right after a shooting, when you knew where the sniper was, modifying one's life patterns to respond to the sniper? The word cower was perhaps too strong, but certainly the fear was there and many people changed their life patterns because of the fear -- even you admitted to being relieved that your wife had made it home safely.

Yes, we have a welfare system in this country that aids many. But it falls far short of the standards enjoyed in many other Western countries. You had said we were the "freest" country, and our social problems were "comparatively slight." I disputed, and still dispute those. There are many wonderful things about this country, but it does us no good to disregard the things we still need to address and fix.
