I think no warnings could potentially put officers into a situation of breaking the law.

Say between quarters, the officers become aware of some previously unknown bad news that is material to outlook, then aren't they legally obliged to inform the shareholders?

I think the press are as bad, or worse, than the actual investment banking industry. You expect people trying to sell you stuff to fluff it up, but the press are in bed with them. Instead of echoing analyst advice, honest journalism would say "so and so of Merril Lynch said buy but our studies show that x times out of ten that should be a siignal to sell". After that line is repeated 30 times a day for 6 mths on CNBS, the little guy would get the picture.
