The distinctions have been made repeatedly for anyone paying attention. Having a conscience upon which one forms principles for living is not equivalent to fanaticism as you have postitioned it. One who terrorizes the innocent to inflict harm on a military enemy is unconscionable and the act of extremism. In this case extremely patriotic individuals (patriotic to a culture founded on set of doctrines)not one who has a conscience about their treatment of individuals.

"Maybe that is the test. If you are sure enough of your morality to kill other people, you are too sure."

I don't think so since the people who refuse to kill for a war effort may be known as consciencious objectors.
