DoCoMo to halt new foreign investment-Asahi
Reuters, 10.29.02, 7:17 PM ET

TOKYO, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Japan's largest mobile phone operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc, plans to halt new investments abroad for the time being after suffering huge losses on its stakes in foreign carriers, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said on Wednesday.

DoCoMo spent nearly two trillion yen ($16.25 billion) to promote its high-speed third-generation wireless technology as the next global standard and ensure it could provide a global roaming network under the W-CDMA (wideband code division multiple access) standard.

But DoCoMo's overseas strategy has come under scrutiny after the company said earlier this month it would write down $4.7 billion on its investments in AT&T Wireless Services Inc (nyse: AWE - news - people) and other overseas firms in the six months to September.

The Asahi report said DoCoMo planned to forgo new capital tie-ups with overseas firms for the time being and concentrate instead on tie-ups focused on providing technology instead.

A DoCoMo spokesman declined immediate comment on the report.

The company's 3G service, which offers high-speed Internet access and face-to-face video calling, has fallen far short of DoCoMo's targets for users. ($1=123.06 Yen)
