Hi Kumar,

Have you heard about this story? Various countries have shown an interest in getting the wider population computer literate. South Korea is an example. Interested if you hear any feedback on this project.

Indian firms press on with cheap handheld computer project

An Indian project to manufacture affordable handheld computers for the masses has been given the go-ahead.

State-run Bharat Electronics and private firm PicoPeta Simputers have agreed to produce more than 400 as a pilot project.

The machines are nicknamed Simputers, which stands for simple, inexpensive, multilingual computer.

The pared-down, easy-to-use gadgets will support both wired and wireless internet connections.

The aim is to boost computer use among India's poor.

The first Simputers are expected to be available by February and will cost 13,000 rupees (£170).

The machines will be powered by Linux and a new type of software developed by PicoPeta.
