Don't forget it is 700 Canadian dollars a month!

That is about $440 in U.S. funds. It is not much by North American standards.

But, of course, that is a lot of money for the poor in China.

Believe it or not:

A highly innocent and trusting young Canadian lady teacher (in her early twenties) in China once asked for assistance in remitting US$500 (she is paid in US $) to her parents in Alberta, Canada. One of her Chinese students volunteered to help her. She gave US$500 to that volunteer. She never saw that student again and her parents never got the money!

US$500 translates into about 3,600 Ren Min Bi which is a fortune to some poor folks in China!!!
