Vatican to issue set of commemorative gold euro coins
Wed Oct 30, 9:50 AM ET

VATICAN CITY - To the delight of coin collectors, the Vatican (news - web sites)'s first set of gold euro coins — one depicting Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac the other bearing an image of Noah's Ark — will go on sale on Dec. 16. the city-state's stamp and coin office said Wednesday.

Just 2,800 of the 50-euro (about US$50) and 20-euro (US$20) coins will be minted, Amalia D'Alascio of the Vatican's Philatelic and Numismatic Office said.

D'Alascio refused to say what the actual sale price will be.

According to a report by the Italian news agency ANSA the larger 15 gram (0.52 ounce) coin will be sold for around 380 euro (about US$380) while the smaller 6 gram (0.21 ounce) coin will cost 152 euro (US$152).

A 10-euro silver coin bearing the inscription in Latin "There is no peace without justice and no justice without forgiveness," will also be sold from Dec. 16, D'Alascio said.

The Vatican adopted the euro as its official currency along with 12 other European countries — and like them was allowed to stamp its own design on one side of the euro coins.

Standard Vatican euro coins minted for every-day use are much sought after by coin collectors and have fetched high prices at auctions.
