SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 1997--Claris
Corporation, a wholly owned software subsidiary of Apple Computer
Inc., today announced revenue of $53.9 million for its third fiscal
quarter which ended June 27, 1997.
Quarterly revenue was down three percent from revenue of $55.6
million in the same quarter last year, and down 23 percent from
record revenue of $69.7 million in the quarter ending March 28, 1997.
"Even without major product launches last quarter, the growth of
our Windows business allowed us to report good revenue and profit
results," said Dominique Goupil, Claris president.
Claris said its operating profit in the quarter was higher than
operating profit in the same quarter last year, although the
company's policy is to not disclose specific quarterly operating
profit figures. This was the 19th consecutive profitable quarter for
Claris.
Sales of Claris software for Windows PCs made up 36 percent of
Claris-brand revenue in the quarter, and the revenue from Windows
sales more than doubled over the same quarter last year.
Highlights of the quarter included record sales via the ClarisPLUS
volume licensing program to large business and education customers in
North America, and strong sales of FileMaker Pro worldwide,
especially in Japan where the Windows version has been available only
since late 1996.
FileMaker Pro, the long-time best-selling Macintosh database
software, was ranked in independent surveys as the second-most
popular Windows database software in Japan and, in the previous
quarter, as the number two stand-alone Windows database in North
America.
As part of its Windows progress, Claris said that IBM Japan began
bundling ClarisImpact 2.0 for Windows business graphics software with
its Aptiva and ThinkPad PCs last quarter.
Goupil said Claris is eager to help launch Mac OS 8 this week,
which Claris will sell as part of its role as worldwide distribution
and sales arm for Apple software.
During the quarter, Claris announced its commitment to developing
applications, including a version of FileMaker Pro Server, for
Apple's next-generation operating system code-named Rhapsody.
For its progress in electronic commerce, Claris was listed in the
third quarter by PC Week as one of its Fast-Track 500 most aggressive
adopters of innovative technologies.
