Taiwan's Siliconware turns into profit in Q3 y/y
TAIPEI, Oct 31 (Reuters) -

sg.biz.yahoo.com

Taiwan's second-largest microchip packager, Siliconware Precision Industries Ltd said on Thursday it made a T$35 million net profit in the third quarter, reversing the T$160.75 million year-ago net loss.

Siliconware is recovering from its first loss in company history last year as the semiconductor industry sank into its worst revenue downturn.

However, a slowdown in the recovery has dealt the tech sector a second blow as cost-concious corporations trim information technology budgets and a boom in consumer demand for electronics like DVD players and digital cameras show signs of receding.

Last week, Siliconware cut its official 2002 pretax profit forecast by 67 percent to T$305 million, and reduced its revenue forecast to the year to T$21.74 billion from T$23.03 billion. Siliconware announced results after close of stock market trade in Taiwan on Thursday. The issue closed unchanged at T$18.70, while the TAIEX share index gained 1.79 percent.
