embrace once taboo ideas to save their livelihoods.

Well, each business goes through it's cycles. Long term you have to focus on what your strengths are. Short term solutions to immediate problems are usually easier to come by.

The most important factor for Alaskan fishers is they have nice clean water and lots of natural wild fish, and a natural environment to feed in. That is an ace card at some time in the future. They just need to keep enhancing that resource so that it can produce a maximum return in fish produce. Just because the price of fish goes down short term is no excuse to over fish it.

Fish farms have all sorts of problems. Disease is by far the biggest. They also suffer from parasites and the attendant problems with chemical poisoning. The farmed species are also showing various health problems compared to the wild variety. Throw in some El Ninos and some other unexpected problems can I can easily imagine a strong market for Alaskan fish to make up a shortfall. Some might then also notice the improvement in taste of real fish, and the ball goes to the other foot.

Short term. Yeah, why spend money on expensive boats and gear when you can scoop them out of a trap?? It's just a matter of tightening the belt short term. Getting communities on board for an agreed action plan in the shorter plan where they can survive. Wait for the good times when the situation gradually reverses.

The gold and silver miners went through some very tough times over the last few decades. The ones that are left are very hardy survivors. It's my estimation they will be raking it in soon -g-
