I did not deny that CH's use of the term was correct English. I used it myself in referring to a fanatic about the sanctity of marriage. I raised the question of whether we meant it in the broader sense when seriously deploring fanaticism, or whether we were referring to a subset of the phenomenon. Who cares if someone is a fanatical sports enthusiast, ordinarily, unless it spills over into transgressive behavior? By invoking the dictionary, when I was pressed for time, you invited a terminological dispute which I had no patience for, and therefore effectively derailed the argument.......
