C'mon, now, Itanium has been a disappointment.

In terms of overall sales, yes. In terms of current performance levels of the I2 chip... no. Unfortunately Intel is playing the Itanium cards very close to their chest these days.

I think it's a manner of "popular perception" here. I honestly don't think the original Itanium was meant to be anything other than a test vehicle given how late the actual tape out was.

I was really anxious to see the performance of the Itanium 2 versus the original Itanium and RISC. I was, quite frankly, blown away.

I also know that the 0.13 micron shrink of the I2 chip with 2X cache and higher frequency (1.3-1.5 seems reasonable) is on the way. That should further boost already spectacular benchmarks, and make the chip more economical to produce.

Has Itanium been a disappointment? Financially, yes, at least for the short-term. Long-term I think it will more than meet expectations. In terms of performance, the initial rev was exceptionally disappointing. But the I2 rectified all of the major shortcomings of the original Itanium...

A lot of people like to knock U.S. corporations for only looking at the quarterly bottom line and not really investing for the long-term... yet it seems to me a lot of people are urging Intel to put the short-term over the long-term with IA-64. In three or four years if IA-64 is still languishing, then it's fair to write it off as a "disappointment".
