I think there is a phenomenon at work in the electorate that started to emerge in 2000 and will be even more evident this year, 2002. The polls tend to undercount Democratic voters who are less afluent and educated and less likely to be polled because they are working two jobs and aren't home much.

It was looking like George W. would win the popular vote and win the presidency with a slight majority of the electoral college votes on the eve of the 2000 election. But, when the results came in, Al Gore won the popular vote easily and the electoral college vote was in dispute due to the Florida debacle.

I think we'll see the same phenomenon this time around. The polls are probably undercounting Dems by about 2 or 3 percent. And it will show in the results of the various races around the country. The Dems will probably pull out victories in the close Senate races.
