The first paragraph had some sarcasm in it. I thought you could detect that.

"We seem to be agreed. Matthew only applies to fellow believers."

I don't accept for a second that Jesus or the companions of Jesus had the closed institutionalized view of who qualifies as "believers/brethren" as you represent. I do see the benefit in getting to know people and forming a community of trusted friends who you know to stand on common principle.
