Embedded Development Kit Enables Low Cost Processor Solution

Thursday October 31, 7:33 am ET

New Kit Supports MicroBlaze in Spartan Series of FPGAs - an Ideal Solution For Cost-Sensitive Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX - News) announced its new Embedded Development Kit (EDK) as the vehicle for low cost solutions supporting the MicroBlaze(TM) 32-bit soft processor core in Spartan(TM) Series devices. The combination of a high performance soft processor and low cost silicon enables customers to rapidly develop flexible programmable systems that are ideal for market segments that Spartan FPGAs have widely penetrated, including plasma displays, set-top boxes, and broadband access. A typical MicroBlaze system, which includes a soft processor core, bus structure, UART, timer, SPI, GPIO, and UART peripherals connected to the IBM CoreConnect(TM) bus, consumes less than 25% of the total available logic resources in the 2S300E Spartan-IIE FPGA, while delivering 49 Dhrystone MIPS at 75 MHz. For complete information about the EDK and MicroBlaze, visit www.xilinx.com/ipcenter.

"Low cost processor systems now have a viable alternative using both the MicroBlaze core and Spartan-IIE FPGAs. Customers have access to a highly integrated solution made up of easy-to-use tools, low cost FPGAs, and customizable soft IP that will get them ahead of existing solutions," said Per Holmberg, director of Programmable Systems Marketing at Xilinx.

Pricing and Availability

The Embedded Development Kit is available immediately for use with Xilinx® Spartan and Virtex(TM) Series FPGAs at a promotional price of $495 until the end of 2002. The MicroBlaze soft processor core is included in the EDK. For more information about the EDK and MicroBlaze, visit xilinx.com . For more information about Spartan Series of FPGAs, visit xilinx.com . Xilinx will also be updating "In-Warranty" MicroBlaze Development Kit (MDK) users with the EDK.
