winked or blinked???? thinklikeadoctor.com Just for fun, then, let's talk about how to do a rectal exam. It's important to remember that you can't just shove your gloved finger in there. There's something called an anal wink - a reflex of sorts - that I guess is designed to prevent the sudden entry of fingers. So you place your finger on the edge of the anus and hold it there for several seconds. The anus winks at first, but then it slowly relaxes, at which point you can begin the exam. So now you can learn to check the rectum for blood, search for masses in there, examine the prostate for tenderness or nodules (males only), and evaluate sphincter tone. But enough about the rectal exam. With any luck, you won't be doing any of those anyway.
