Ashley, you saved me posting. I was just about to point out that the problem is the mind not being on the job and that hands on the wheel are irrelevant [more or less]. You see, we do agree! That's why buses used to have signs "Do not talk to driver while bus is in motion". It surprises me that people who presumably drive cars are not aware than sometimes there is mental space to chat and listen to radios, talk on phones, beat recalcitrant children in the back seat, eat sandwiches, look at scenery etc. Sometimes it's a matter of ignoring all distractions and focusing on the quick-happening action on the road. Banning cellphones is stupid. Communication is a good thing, which helps traffic flow for a start. How about when it's time to report a criminal in a car? Can't make the call because that would be illegal. Once again, it's treating people like Mindless Zombies.
