Here with a loaf of bread beneath the bough
A Flask of wine, a book of verse - and thou
Beside me singing in the wilderness -
And wilderess is paradise now.

- Omar Khayyam, Persian Poet/Astronomer/Mathematician

Metaphor and Meaning

Bread : The life-force, or energy in the body, stimulated thru meditation.

Wine : The wine of spiritual intoxication.

The Bough : The spinal tree of life.

Beneath the bough : When consciousness is gathered inside the spinal tree.

A book of verse : Inspiration emanating from the book of the heart, once its restless emotions have been soothed, transformed into a calm feeling.

Thou : The cosmic beloved.

Singing : Entertaining the soul's intuition with perception of the complete truth.

Wilderness : Inner stillness. In the begining, the meditator, his mind no longer awhirl with restless thoughts, experiences a certain loneliness. Omar Khaiyyam compares this initial state of spiritual emptiness to the desolation of a desert.

Wilderness of Paradise : In this wilderness of inner stillness soon appear radiant, multicolored wildflowers of absolute joy.
