Duke - the servers are nowhere near the same. The HPQ server which compares to the PowerEdge 2600 is the ML350. For the same configuration as DELL, the ML350 is a lot cheaper. I did a simple configuration of Dual 2.2GHz processors, a gig of RAM and everything else stock. The ML350 came out at $3,657 and the DELL 2600 at $4,387... that's a big difference. Try a couple of configurations yourself and see what you think. The HPQ is a lot less for any set of options I configured.

The DL580 uses a completely different processor family - don't be fooled by the "Xeon" name, Intel now uses that for anything they want. There are lots of other differences that put the two models in separate classes.

Until recently, DELL had been very competitive on price but it looks like HPQ is out to get them in this low end space looking at the pricing I'm seeing today.
