Verizon Online DSL works with Genuity, the company that manages and owns their routers.
Verizon Online only leases the routers from Genuity. Earthlink depends on Genuity too.

Verizon Online does not want to depend on Genuity because if Genuity goes BK, they are up the creek without a paddle. Genuity routers are Redbacks. Also, Verizon has purchased SMS10000s from RBAK in March and have deployed them as tunnel switches between their Frame Relay/ATM network and Genuity's routers.

Verizon is already in bed w/ RBAK. Not sure what routers VZ is interested in, but if it's edge routers and not core routers they want, I would bet everything on RBAK since not even JNPR's Unisphere comes close to RBAKs superior edge technology. I believe VZ may have mentioned JNPR and RSTN as a smoke screen/decoy only, egging them along only for some sort of PR manipulation. All imho.

Fasten your seat belts.
