KLP, Let's consider 2000 first. There was no problem with the butterfly ballot, just with those that were too dumb to read, and comprehend. That ballot was designed by a democrat, and approved by the Democratic party, but it was the democrats that raised all the stink because Gore was losing, and they couldn't stand the prospect of that. The hanging chad thing was nit picking at is most ridiculous, and there were no problems in the counties that were mainly Republican. There seemed to be an intelligence factor at play in that election.

When we voted, I noticed that there was a small box attached to the touch screen voting machine with a usual kind of lock on it, and what looked like an electronically controlled lock. It was obvious that the tape recording your votes was fed into that box. It appeared that the machines would be stored under lock and key during the times that polling place was no open, and no box was to be opened until the polls close on election day. I am not sure that the "vote early" option pertains to all counties. In come counties there will be attempts to tamper regardless of the security used. Our only hope is that they boxes will be under guard at all times.
