I guess it depends on amount of money involved. If the amount is small (<$10000), you can't buy SPYs, since they are only sold in round lots. Also for small amounts of money, brokerage commissions constitute quite a high "front end load" for SPYs, while you can buy S&P mutuals without any fee in $100-1000 increments.
