I live near the US/Canadian border, and have had contact with US citizens that have traveled to Canada since 9/11. The one story that sticks out most in my mind is the one that a young neighbor (25 yrs old) told to me. He spent a month with relatives in BC last winter. When the subject came, up he was very surprised at the animosity aimed towards Americans. His specific words were "they really hate Americans."

I have met average Canadians in our stores, and they are quite friendly, but I also have to admit that in the 5-6 times that I have visited Canada over the years, I haven't really felt very welcome. Let me explain that the Canadian people seem to be very sober, staunchly private people who certainly do not wear their hearts on their sleeves. I have always found it difficult to elicit a smile. I assume that is a very British trait, but having never been to Great Britain, I wouldn't really know for sure.

I don't want to paint all Canadians with one broad brush, and granted these were young people my neighbor was "hanging" with, but frankly I was really shocked.

I have to wonder where they got their ideas and how those ideas were formed. My hope is that this is an isolated incident. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

PS I do not believe that Canada is a freeloading nation or that Canadians are freeloaders. I do hope that they get a solid grip of their reported immigration problems.
