Dell to launch PDAs in November

LONDON (AP) — Computer manufacturer Dell Computer will release its first personal digital assistant products in the United States in late November, a company vice president said Monday.

Leslie Geesey, vice president at Dell Europe, Middle East & Africa, said two PDAs will be released in time for Christmas, with the official launch date Nov. 18.

Dell had previously said it would launch a PDA sometime next year, but had not given a specific date.

Dell currently sells PDAs made by Palm, Sony, NEC, and Casio. Rival computer maker Hewlett-Packard makes its own handhelds.

The entry of Dell, one of the world's largest computer makers, into any market is often seen as a cause for concern among competitors. The Austin-based company earlier this year said it would start selling printers under its own brand.

Geesey, speaking from research firm Gartner's IT Symposium in Cannes, France, also said Dell is starting to see increased activity among its largest customers.

"It's quite encouraging," she said. "It may be signs of economic recovery, or an acknowledgment that they can't stop spending forever."
