as I recall, the newer machine is running WinXP home, is it not?
if that is the case ... all you need to do *(or so it seems to me from memory as I've done it, but not here handy where I can check) is to simply plug in a Cat5 cable from the NIC card in the old P2 into the NIC card on the Dell .... WinXP will tell you what you need to do from there ....
the printer stays hooked up to the Dell, but no direct cable from the P2 to the printer is needed ....
as I said, that is from memory, but it is easily doable with WinXP .... not so very easy with other WinXX stuff, but still doable ....
I haven't done it in a good while, and, as I'm getting senile, I could be "partially incorrect" ....gggg
but the hole in the wall is gonna have to be large enough for the cable end unless you have access to a crimping tool .... I'd recco just drilling a 5/8inch hole and not to worry ....
the hole I drilled in the ceiling in Mar's office was one inch ... hehehehe the fish wire I use needs a fairly good size hole and I didn't want to be hasseled too much, as the flooring in the attic is on top of 2x8 joists with 2x4 subfloor cross joists and the entire cavity filled with blown insulation .....
on the hole in your wall ... just use a plastic cover plate *(similar to wall switch or wall duplex plug cover plates) which is designed for tv cable or such ..... |
