If trade sanctions were perfect, no one would be buying Iraqi oil, and the global supply of oil would shrink somewhat. The result is higher prices, though not on the order of $3-4 a gallon.

Jimmy Mac is talking about imposing a protective tariff on foreign oil, probably the best way to ween ourselves off of Middle Eastern oil. Of course, that would cripple our economy and put America at a distinct disadvantage vs. other nations. They'll be more than willing to buy the cheap oil that America refuses.

So in a sense, I do agree with you that it's all about oil. Saddam Insane wouldn't even have the money to fund his weapons programs or maintain his oppressive regime without it.
