Furukawa Elec Denies Report To Quit US Optic Fiber Output
Tuesday November 5, 9:49 pm ET

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan's Furukawa Electric Co. (J.FUR or 5801) Wednesday denied a newspaper report that it will stop manufacturing mass-production-type optical fibers at its U.S. subsidiary.
The Asahi Shimbun reported that the U.S. unit will cease mass-production of optical fibers and focus on specialty fibers. The move would mean a drastic cutback of the company's U.S. operation only a year after it launched the U.S. business by purchasing a Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News) optical fiber unit for Y280 billion, the report said.

Saying the report isn't true, Furukawa Electric said the U.S. unit will continue to produce optical fibers.
