A most interesting election...

I voted 5 minutes before polls closed last night in Chicago and there was a heavy turn out -- we had a Democrat win the Governors seat here for the first time in decades...Democrats pretty much did well all across Illinois. Yet, nationally we see that Bush and the Republicans were able to energize their base and win a number of key races...I think the Repub. gains should be viewed through the prism of 9/11....We still seem to be in 'a war-time environment'...folks are very patriotic and giving the President and his party the benefit of the doubt (they may regret that later). It's amazing that the Democrats failed to develop a national message and take advantage of the situation....we saw some big upsets in states like Massachusetts, Georgia, Maryland, etc...IMO, Karl Rove's Wag the Dog strategy worked like a charm nationally for Bush -- use Iraq and National Security as the main issues and distract attention from the economy, the environment and education (where the Dems are traditionally stronger)...Combine that with a popular President who made about 90 campaign visits and raised over $150 Million for candidates and you find some results that may NOT be too surprising.

regards,
