TIM To Beat Hutchison To 3G Launch?

(BWCS Staff, 06/11/2002, BWCS Staff) The race to be the first launch a commercial 3G service in Europe is still on. As Hutchison Whampoa’s Italian and UK 3G operations appear to be staggering ever closer to the finish line, Telecom Italia Mobile says it is preparing to put on a final burst and pip them to the post.

TIM’s bullish CEO, Marco de Benedetti, claims his company will sell tens of thousands of full 3G subscriptions by the end of this year. According to an interview in the UK’s Financial Times, de Benedetti, says services will begin this year with what he termed “reasonable coverage” from the 1,000 or so 3G base stations that his company has installed.

Meanwhile, Hutchison, TIM’s closest rival in the race to put 3G into commercial operation in Europe, was forced to admit earlier this week that it may not in fact be able to deliver 3G handsets prior to Christmas after all. The Hong-Kong owned company had earlier sated that next generation phones would be available this week via its websites in Italy and later in a selection of its high street shops. It has now played down this suggestion and blames “minor technical problems” with the handsets.

De Benedetti believes that up to half of his company’s massive subscriber base will be using 3G phones by 2005, though he pointed out that 3G handsets are not going to be big this Christmas.
