In addition, although I worked in private education for 15 years, I do think education at the elementary and high school level should be publicly, not privately, run. As long as the control is local. The problem with education is letting control shift from the local school board whose members we know and can keep a close eye on to bureaucrats in the state capitols or, worse, in D.C.
And big school districts like LA, Chicago, DC, NYC, etc. should be broken up into many smaller, local districts. I don't have an exact number, but I don't think a school district should have more than about 20 schools max, and no more than 10,000 students max. And even that may be too big.
With those caveats, I think public funding of education at that level is essential to maintaining a healthy democracy. |
